Psychoanalysis is both a theory of the human psyche and a method for it
treatment. It was founded by Sigmund Freud between 1885 and 1939 and continues to be developed by psychoanalysts around the world. Psychoanalysis has four main areas of application:
1) as a theory of the functioning of the human psyche
2) as a method of treating mental problems
3) as a research method
4) as a way to look at cultural and social phenomena: literature,
art, cinema, stage performances, policies and communities.
Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy are for those who feel trapped in recurring mental health problems, hindering their ability to experience happiness with their partners, families and friends, hampering the success and realization of their work and their normal daily tasks. Anxiety, restraint and depression are often signs of internal conflict. They lead to relationship difficulties and, when left untreated, can have a significant impact on personal and professional choices. The roots of these problems are often deeper and cannot be reached by normal conscious self-perception, which is why they turn out to be unsolvable without psychotherapy.
With the help of an analyst, the patient can learn more about the unconscious parts of these disorders. Conversations with a psychoanalyst in an atmosphere of security help the patient to understand and experience parts of his previously unknown inner world (thoughts and feelings, memories and dreams); it brings mental pain relief, encourages personality development and provides self-awareness with that enhances the patient’s confidence to pursue goals in his or her life. The positive effects of psychoanalysis are lasting; personal growth continues well after the analysis is complete.
